Guitarist Music Theory – Learning Intervals and Scales

I want to talk to you about music theory for guitarist. Before I forget this, I’d like to address a question that you might have.

“Do you need music theory to play?” maybe not actually!

I know this is not conventional but, I think that if you’re studying this any lesson just because you think that you needs theory to play you’re wrong. You’re wrong because any guitarist can play without knowing music theory. However, if you feel stuck in your studies and you want to develop your songwriting a little bit further and know what you’re playing so you can have more options, then music theory is for you.

From the beginning, you start to talk, you learn a few words like daddy and mama and then when you want to learn how these words are built, you learn the alphabet, that’s what we’re going to do here, talk about the alphabet of music theory.

What are intervals? Very simple they are simply the distance between two notes and in music two notes can be measured. The smallest note we will use to measure the distance between two notes is called the step and on the guitar half step is simply one fret. If you’ve got that then you’re ready to study intervals.

Lets give you a little bit of background here a little bit of vocabulary so we are all on the same page. Intervals are the distance between two notes that means that you need a reference note, a bottom note. That reference note has a special name, it’s called the root.

So no matter where you play on your guitar, it doesn’t matter if you know the actual name of the note or not, but if you want to measure the distance between a given note and another, just remember that the first note is called the root.

As you may know, the notes in music are named after the alphabet and there are seven notes: A, B, C, D, E, F, G and after G we go back to A, there is no H note.
